27 Tackling a triathlon in the English countryside “Of all the disciplines, the triathlon is the most brutal and unforgiving. For fearsome stamina and capacity to meet the pain and beat it, there are few trials like the triathlon.” -Frederick Forsyth Formidable as it sounds, two Saimers attempted and completed a relay triathlon on a cool September morning at Cheshire, UK. The amateur event consisted of a 500-metre swim, 21 km cycling and a 5 km run. When the event kicked off, Jonty Cartwright entered the water, and lo behold, was the first to finish! He handed over the timing chip to Christopher Chan, who set a blistering pace all through the rolling terrain that is typical of the Nantwich countryside. Pete, a friend of the duo, collected the chip from Chris at the 21 km mark, and ran the 5k like a man possessed. The result was the greatest reward, for the trio were declared winners of the triathlon. All this despite the cyclist suffering an injury and undergoing weeks of physiotherapy earlier in the year. Well done, Jonty, Chris and good friend Pete, you made it better together! Christopher Chan & Jonty Cartwrigt Process R&D & Process Engineering Manchester Special features
